Semla Buns (semlor) are one of Sweden’s most iconic pastries. They are also called fettisdagsbulle (literally “Fat Tuesday roll”) since they were originally eaten only on Shrove Tuesday (the day before Ash Wednesday). They are made with cardamom sweet dough, filled with almond paste, and topped with powdered sugar.
