Sylvsmidja is known for being masters of the bunad jewlery craft ('bunad' is the traditional costume in Norway). Many of the traditional broaches and earrings are known for their distinct dangling 'spoons' that beautifully reflect light. These earrings expand on the traditional and take it into the modern era by expanding the idea of the dangling 'spoons' with a modern interpretation. Master goldsmith Leif Johannessen taught at Bergen School of Crafts in Norway. In 1940, Leif and his wife, Betzy, moved to Voss ~ where Sylvsmidja is based still today. They stamped all the jewelry on the back with a J shaped like a drinking horn, so that everyone who bought it could be sure that they owned a genuine Sylvsmidja piece of jewelry.
Today, Sylvsmidja in Voss has 65 employees and is Norway's leading producer of bunad silver. Sylvsmidja's skilled silversmiths and goldsmiths have extensive experience and extensive knowledge of sterling silver.
