The Dala horse (Dalahäst in Swedish) is one of the best known symbols of Sweden.  Each Dala Horse is handcrafted in Sweden and painted to have its own unique character, making your Dala Horse the only one like it in the world!

Handcrafted in Sweden.

All Dala Horses are hand carved and painted making each one unique. Painting styles and colors vary from horse to horse.

Painted pine.

The timber for this Dala Horse comes from the slowly growing pine forests around Lake Siljan in Sweden.

After being hand-carved, the horses are dipped in color baths three times and then painted freehand in the krusmålning tradition (a form of folk painting).

Grannas A Olsson Hemslöjd is the original maker of the Dala Horse as it is known world wide. Handcrafted into shape and then handpainted, each Grannas Dala Horse is an heirloom quality original.

Founded in 1922 by Anders Olsson, 2022 marked 100 years in business! Still operating as a small family run business (third and fourth generation). Grannas is based in Nusnäs, Sweden, a popular spot for visitors from all over the world.

In an effort to reduce their environmental impact, Grannas completely discontinued their use of solvent-based products by 2018; today all of their paints and varnishes are water-based.
